The information in this article is up to date for tax year 2023 (returns filed in 2024).

It’s time to do your taxes.  The earlier you file, the sooner you’ll get your tax refund.  Plus, the earlier you file the less risk there is of someone using your identity to file a fraudulent return.  Here are 5 things to remember when you do your taxes.

Use tax software to file an accurate return

We understand wanting to save money by doing it yourself. But you’re more likely to make mistakes preparing your return by hand versus using tax software. Even the smallest mistake on your return can delay your tax refund for weeks or months.  ezTaxReturn helps you file with 100% accuracy by doing the calculations and preparing the necessary forms for you. With our step-by-step guidance, you’ll get every tax credit and deduction you deserve. No tax knowledge needed.

Have all your tax documents handy

Before you sit down to do your taxes, it’s important to get organized.  Having everything readily available will make it easier to take advantage of every tax break you deserve and file an accurate return.  The deadline to issue W-2s and 1099s is January 31st, so expect to get yours soon.  In the meantime, use our tax prep checklist to gather the rest of your documents.

FREE customer support is available

Less than 10% of ezTaxReturn customers contact us for support, but it’s important to remember that if you have questions, we’re here to help.  You can get the answers you need via phone, email or by searching our Knowledgebase.  If you’re just interested in your federal refund status, the best thing to do is go to IRS.gov and use their “Where’s My Refund?” tool.  It’s updated daily (usually overnight) and you can begin tracking your refund 24 hours after filing. Want to check the status of your state refund? Our “Where’s My State Tax Refund?” article can help you get the answers you need.

Use the correct AGI

When you file your taxes online, remember that you’ll need to provide your prior-year AGI.  You can find this information on your 2022 tax return.  The AGI is on line 11 of the form 1040.  If you’re still waiting for your 2022 tax return to be processed or didn’t file at all, use $0 as your prior-year AGI.  If you’re a returning ezTaxReturn customer, your prior-year AGI will auto-populate.
